When the Autopilot is engaged in the Altitude Hold Mode (ALT) the ride can be quite exhilarating. Data taken from the Dynon Avionics "black box" file shows the vertical speed in feet per minute of a recent flight.
As you can see the plane is constantly going up and down. When the descent rate goes above 1,000 fpm and the airspeed tape is in the yellow I usually disconnect the autopilot and fly it by hand.
A Vashon engineer flew the airplane and says this is caused by a continuing series of updrafts and downdrafts. This is normal for an LSA ( light sport aircraft ).
